10 architects

These are the influential architects that we had learned about by watching the videos on them:
  1. Miles van der Rohe: He is one of the fathers of modern architecture because of his extensive use of steel, glass, and lightweight structures. He coined the phrase "Less is more".
  2. Shin Takamatsu: His buildings are original, ascetic, and inventions. His buildings all have a weird look to them, like a machine. He was an innovative genius who had a different view of structures.
  3. Andrea Palladia: He is famous for the use of proportions in his works.
  4. Etienne Louis Boulle: Based off of the Greeks and Romans, he expanded their buildings with symmetry and expanding the sizes.
  5. Charles-Edouard Jeanneret-Gris (Le Corbusier): Considered one of the first modern architects, he was very interested in designing a new way of urban living. Developed and used a unique system of proportions.
  6. Frank Furness: Taking the Victorian style, Furness uses a common architectural language to oversize, squeeze, stretch, or over accentuate buildings.
  7. Frank Lloid Wright: Known as one of the greatest American architects of all time, Wright used and is known for his extensive use of free flowing forms.
  8. Antoni Gaudi: Breaking from traditional lines and forms, his buildings prove that buildings do not have to be normal or by certain guildlines.
  9. Tadao Ando: Using deliberate, bold, and serious forms, and the use of concrete, his building are sublime and beautiful, using water and light in his elements.
  10. Coop Himmelblau: Using deconstructionism, Coop Himmelblau changed the way we look at buildings, with the unique, shuffled and misplaced styles of buildings.

Khan Academy

1) It was very organized and I suppose that this video very easily flowed from what was going on in the last one.
2) What works well for me in the video is the fact that the main points of the lesson are titled with different colors.
3) It is confusing how the focus on the lesson goes all the way from the beginning of reconstruction to the beginning of the great depression and the times that these had occured at were so far apart. The lessons in history should be assigned by the years that the events occur not by summarizing the largest and most important events that occur.
4) Flipping the classroom would only work in a few situations and it really depends on how much the students are willing to learn and how much time that they want to put in. It would work if the children would actually focus on the videos without getting destracted without a teacher being able to keep them in line and paying attention.

1) The 3-D CAD function that should be used to create a wire coat hanger is the fillets.
2) You would use the holes in order to create a 3-D representation of a spindle that was created on a wood lathe.
3) The 3-D CAD solid making keeps track of the things that you do and saves them.
4) The way that you would be able to fix a mistake that you had previously made without using the undo function would be by pressing Ctrl+z.

Glider Challenge

Glider Challange

1.  The activity that we were doing was to create planes made out of paper and bolsa wood and we were supposed to follow the directions to make the plane. I worked with both Timmy and Jack. The problems that we ran into were that the plane was to fragile.

2.
3.
4.  I wasn't present for many of the times that we had tested it but when they did test it, it had broke because it was so fragile or because were weren't using the right type of glue.
5.  Our plane flew the farthest. And that is the only achievment that we won.
6.  We brainstormed, modeled, and prototyped.

Money Ball Reflection

1) What was the “Moneyball”approach that Billy Beane and Peter Brandt applied to the Oakland Athletics 2002 season? Was it an “art” or a “science”? What single statistic did they boil their value consideration down to? (In class research/discussion)

Their approach to the 2002 season was to asssemble a team that would win games and championships on a small budget.  It was a science, and the one stat that they valued the most was OBP.

2) What is the equation used to calculate OBP? (In class research/discussion)

The equation for OBP is (Hits + Walks + Hit by Pitch) / (At Bats + Walks + Hit by Pitch + Sacrifice Flies).

3) What is design? (In class research/discussion)

Design is a plan designed to improve something.

4) Describe 3 situations where movie characters (intentionally or not) applied a step from the PLTW 12 Step Design Process. Explain both the (a) situation as well as (b) how the step is relevant:

1 -When Billy and his scouts were discussing which players they liked and didnt like, brainstorm step.2 - They identified their constraints when Billy talked to his owner about their budget.3 - Billy refined his design when he traded Jeremy Giambi and Carlos Pena away.

5) What is “Leadership”? List the three aspects of leadership that we come up with in class. (In class research/discussion)

1 - The ability to lead
2 - When your peers respect you
3 - Making smart decisions

6) Describe 3 circumstances from the story where a character exercised effective leadership:

1 - Billy went against the scouts judgement and signed players like Giambi, Justice, and Bradford.

2 -  Fired the head scout who was very opposed to Billy's methods.

3 - Traded for Rincon when they needed a left handed reliever

7) According to the movie, what was the A’s record at the start of their winning streak?

68: 51

8) What does this ratio simplify to (roughly)?

 1.33: 1

9) How long was the A’s record setting winning streak?

20games won.

10) Given the A’s win/loss ratio at the start of the streak (listed two questions above), what are the odds of winning 20 games in a row? Run the numbers. (In class research/discussion)

They had .000013chance to win 20 games in a row.

11) Based on your calculation, do you think the A’s got lucky or was there something to the Moneyball approach?

You cant predict 20 game winning streaks, no matter how good your statistics are.

12) Did Billy Beane strictly apply the “science” of Moneyball to his management approach? Was there an “art” to his efforts as well? Describe a circumstance where he broke from the Moneyball approach to make a positive change for the team.

There wasnt really an art to his methods, and one instance where he broke away from the moneyball method was when he traded away jeremy giambi and traded for ricardo rincon.

Bonus Question (look into this if you’ve finished ahead of the class):
Money Ball was originally a book. What author wrote the book? What other books has this author written? Is there a theme to his writing?

The author of moneyball is Micheal Lewis.  He has written some other books like The Blind Side.

CAD Project

This is the CAD Design Project that we were required to do this past week.
